Rhodium

Rhodium (Lat. rhodium) is one of the most expensive and rarest metals. This shiny, silvery-white metal has a very high melting point of 1963 °C and a boiling point of 3695 °C. Rhodium is also strong, resistant to oxidation and corrosion and has excellent catalytic properties. This is why it is primarily used as a component of automotive catalytic converters, which account for about 80% of rhodium demand. A single catalytic converter usually contains less than 1 g of rhodium (on average about 0.3–0.4 g, US Department of Energy data).

Rhodium can also be found in modern high-power projectors, where it is used to make lamp reflectors. Because of its high price, rhodium (chemical symbol Rh) is used much less often and only in very small amounts in ordinary household appliances. It is more widely used in glass fibre production equipment and in industrial chemistry.
