Iridis

Iridium

Iridium (Lat. Iridium) is one of the rarest metals found on Earth and the most corrosion-resistant material known. Iridium also has excellent thermal conductivity. Although pure iridium is very brittle, when combined with other metals it adds strength and durability to the resulting alloys. The melting point of iridium is 2446 °C and its boiling point is 4428 °C.

Iridium (chemical symbol Ir) is used in many specialised industries where resistance to corrosion and high temperatures is essential. However, the amounts of iridium in ordinary electrical equipment are so small that retail recovery of this metal through recycling would be completely uneconomical.

Iridium is used in the production of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) products such as television and computer screens. It is also used to make special containers (crucibles) for melting and processing industrial metals. Iridium is further used in electrodes for hydrogen (PEM electrolysis) and chlorine production and in automotive spark plugs. Platinum-iridium alloys are used in jewellery.
