After the US central bank raised interest rates<\/a> by 25 basis points (0.25%) in mid-September, expectations that this policy will continue have been growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to the latest market investor data, the probability that the US will raise interest rates again by 0.25% as early as the end of October has recently reached 72%<\/a>. The probability that, at its December meeting, the Fed will raise interest rates by 0.5% from their current level stands at 60%<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If US interest rates are indeed raised this aggressively, dollar-denominated precious metals (gold, silver, etc.) could become less attractive assets for holders of foreign currencies. The latest statements by Fed officials<\/a>, persistently high US inflation<\/a>, and the exceptionally high number of new jobs created in the country in August<\/a> (162,000) all signal that interest rates could indeed rise more sharply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The global silver price fell by more than 5.6% between September 23 and September 29, reaching USD 60.79 per troy ounce.<\/p>\n\n\n Like gold, the silver market was also affected by US interest rate policy. Following the Fed\u2019s interest rate hike, the dollar rose to a two-month high<\/a>, while US Treasury securities recorded a sharp rise in yields. The yield on 10-year US Treasury bonds rose to its highest level since mid-2007 and recently exceeded 5.2%<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A strengthening dollar discourages some investment from holders of foreign currencies.
